my 2 cents

WordPress is trying to be too much like tumblr and other micro-blogging platforms. Their whole interface change to minimalize and simplify is a mistake because all it does is confuse and become convoluted. This is like have a size 10 foot (U.S.) and trying to cram your way into a size 6 because you think those heels look more cute, fab, fun smaller. Are you really wanting to go through the torture of mutilating your foot to get the fit?

Why try to fit in over rising above? I’ve worked for both CVS and Walgreens. Front store and Pharmacy. Yes, they are competitors, but I will tell you one thing; CVS is innovative and all Walgreens does is trying to fit in and mold and once in a while try to make a great business idea sound like their own when CVS was doing it 6 months – 2 years before them. Would you rather be a Walgreens or a CVS?

Show someone what they can do if they used your product vs another in the market, let them see they have to learn it and you will come up farther in the race because they’re going to want to show and tell everyone about it.

Copy another business or fad, become so user-friendly that a monkey can do it and it lacks appeal and that consumer comes out feeling less satisfied.

Think of programs like Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Avid; anyone can use those programs if they learn them. Not everyone wants to take that time because they like instant gratification, a couple clicks and bam, they have their ad/movie. The person who knows how to utilize those professional programs, may take longer than click-click-boom, but because of their knowledge, their ad/movie is going to blow click-click-boom out of the water.

I know, I know we are talking about a free blogging platform here, but they sell product. Domains, customizations, etc. WordPress is worth a lot more than following a clique it doesn’t belong in. Let tumblr compete with other micro-blogging plats. Why aren’t we growing and going against platforms like TypePad, SquareSpace, etc.?

  1. I agree I hate the new interface

  2. Is that why they keep changing the interface? It takes ten times the clicks to get where I need to go now. It’s not that big a deal, but I don’t get the change. I also don’t get the point of changing up the FP as people said. Weren’t the FP blogs supposed to attract people to WP? I dunno. Sometimes people think “change, change, change”. I’m not against change, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

    • Combat Babe says:

Yeah, I believe WP retracted FP to gain some exclusivity. Similar to gated communities. In order to see what they have, you have to gain access. It also forces us as bloggers to use other means to attract non-WP users to our blogs. We are in essence the sole drivers of bringing outside traffic to WP. Do I think it was a good idea? No, not in the beginning I didn’t. Though, I cannot say I don’t understand their reasoning.

As for the user interface change, it’s ridic(k)ulous, as you and I both agree. I started this post using their “new post” format from their homepage navigation and when I went to hit preview, I lost my entire post. I then had to click to the dashboard, click to all posts, pull it up and ended up using the dashboard format that I’ve always loved, and if they do away with, I will leave. Not a threat, just a fact. I know it is new and with new brings bugs, but they should have kept it in test mode a little longer to work it out before they slammed us with it. I also believe they should have gone a different direction with it, but I’m not techie enough to know which direction.

I don’t have an education in running a business or a website, but I still have opinions because I have been in management positions for big and small businesses.

      • Yeah, I only go to the dashboard, all posts, and use that format because you can’t do much with your post if you hit new post anywhere outside of the dashboard. But now to get there you have to go to my blogs, then into your blog, then scroll to the dashboard. And if I try to click on notifications etc outside of my blog, it won’t work

  3. I agree wholeheartedly. It’s very irksome. I’m not sure what WP’s ultimate goal is, but they seem to be intent on pissing off a LOT of bloggers.
